Louisiana House Democrats Call For Protecting Voters and Preserving Order in the May 16 Election

Baton Rouge, LA- The current uncertainty surrounding Louisiana’s congressional map and the status of the May 16 elections is the direct result of actions taken by the Governor and the Attorney General. They supported this map before opposing it—they advocated for its passage, the Governor signed it into law, and they defended SB 8 in court before reversing course. They bear full responsibility for the consequences of those decisions.

Any claim that the Supreme Court’s ruling automatically blocks the May 16th elections—especially when absentee voting is already underway—is simply false.

The Court’s decision does not halt the election process on its own. And any attempt to suspend or disrupt an ongoing election at this stage would raise serious constitutional concerns, including under the Purcell Doctrine.

Going forward our objectives should be to fix the map, protect the integrity of the process, and give Louisiana voters the fair, orderly elections they deserve.
