Louisiana House Democratic Caucus Stands with Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus Against Attorney General Elizabeth “Liz” Murrill’s Overreach in Callais Case
Baton Rouge, LA – The Louisiana House Democratic Caucus stands in support of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus (LLBC) and their efforts to protect the voices and representation of Louisiana’s people in the ongoing redistricting process.
The LLBC has filed a writ of mandamus against Attorney General Elizabeth “Liz” Murrill for her decision to unilaterally insert herself into the Callais v. Landry case by submitting a supplemental brief directly going against legislation democratically passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. The Louisiana House Democratic Caucus supports this action, recognizing it as a necessary step to push back against political overreach that threatens Louisiana voters. The Attorney General’s decision not only steps outside the bounds of her authority, but also endangers the very principles of democracy and fairness that our communities depend on. When elected officials act without accountability, it undermines public trust and places political power over the people’s will.
“This is about ensuring every Louisianan has a fair voice in their government,” said Democratic Caucus Chairman Matthew Willard (D-97). “We cannot allow partisan maneuvers to silence communities that have fought for generations to be heard. The steps taken by the Black Caucus are essential in defending not just Black voters, but the integrity of our democracy.”
Redistricting is about more than maps—it’s about families, neighborhoods, and the future of our state. Louisiana deserves leaders who will strengthen our democratic institutions, not weaken them through political games.
The Louisiana House Democratic Caucus reaffirms its commitment to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, and with all Louisianans, in the fight for fair representation and a government that works for the people.
